Meerkat at Malibu Beach
I fell in love with Meerkat Photography's (Jen Francine) Instagram feed when I was actually shown it by another photographer when we were looking for a model for our shoot! The hazy, pastel, dreaminess of her images really caught my interest. Unusual poses and positions inspired by her self portrait work added a slightly surreal edge to them too.
It wouldn't be the normal style I would imagine combining L.O.M with, but I had a feeling our two styles could really work together, and got in contact.
She told me that she liked to shoot early morning, because of the light... I'm more of a golden hour girl myself, but only because I hate getting out of bed before 10am!
We picked date and location, and when my alarm went off at 5:30am on a cloudy Tuesday in LA I was actually pretty excited packing my case and getting ready in the dark.
Our lovely model Christina picked me up at 6am and we headed out to Malibu, on a route I hadn't taken before, and I was in full tourist mode taking pictures and videos as we headed through the misty hills.
When we got to the beach it was freezing! I don't even know what temperature it was but I was not handling it wearing a leather jacket and big woollen cardigan. There was a whole film crew set up further down the beach that didn't even venture outside of their trailers and vans the whole time we were there. I was amazed at how well Christina did in these pictures whilst I huddled into myself in the background.
It really was worth getting up at that time for these beautiful shots, I love how different they are from anything I normally do. I didn't give any direction or suggestions and just let Jen and Christina do their thing, its always great to see what other creatives can do with your work and gives me a new perspective on the pieces.
